The Standards Station Is Coming Soon!
In addition to the Sounds of Christmas, for the last six years, I have been running another online station. It’s for a senior living community, actually a company that owns and operates about fifty senior communities across the country. It’s a private station, just for residents of those communities, which is why I haven’t talked about or promoted it here, or on social media.
Anyway, they have decided they want to do something different for their residents, and they will no longer be using this station. Over the course of the next month, I need to decide what I’m going to do with it (though as you have probably guessed, I do have an idea).
My original idea for this station was to play music the residents of senior communities liked but couldn’t find elsewhere. It wasn’t exactly a “standards station”, but it was certainly standards heavy. I programmed it to play the most popular songs of the 1940s and 1950s (with a little leeway on either end of those decades).
I found that I really enjoyed listening to it. I love so many of those songs, and even more of the voices - many pictured above - many of the same voices you hear on the Sounds of Christmas station. And I love the songs - "Skylark", "Always", "Unforgettable", so many more.
That love for the music, music that most don’t get to hear any more, is what led me to create the Sounds of Christmas station in the first place. And now, maybe it’s time to do something similar with standards.
I wasn’t so sure that was a great idea. I figured there were probably lots of other stations out there, already doing the same thing. Surprisingly, there really aren’t. I found less than one hundred traditional radio stations across the U.S. that specialize in, or at least feature, this kind of music. And far fewer online. So it certainly seems like there’s room for me to do this.
Then I started to think about what I would play. Much of it seems obvious (again, many pictured above). And there have been plenty of current artists who sing those wonderful songs - like Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Rod Stewart did a whole bunch of albums covering the Great American Songbook. And plenty more somewhere in between.
I think what I’m going for is something along the lines of a station that plays the greatest songs of all time performed by the greatest voices of all time.
If all goes well, the Standards Station will launch on September 1, though I'm hoping to actually start the music playing in August. I will add a page to the Sounds of Christmas website shortly with all the info, including details on how, where and when you can listen.
If you like this, I could certainly use some help getting it up and running. To that end, I’m adding a donation button below. I don’t know exactly what it will cost to get this switched and retooled, but any assistance is certainly appreciated. Eventually, the Standards Station will carry limited advertising (as does the Sounds of Christmas), but my goal for now is to simply get it up and running, and keep it up and running through the end of the year. Once the new season of the Sounds of Christmas wraps up in early January, then I’ll be able to really get to work on it.

By the way, if you are an artist who feels the way I do about this kind of music, and have even recorded some, and would like information about promoting yourself and your work on the Standards Station, contact me below.
I feel a little like this station is a rescue, and I’m re-homing it, and I am grateful to anyone who feels the way I do about music, especially about these wonderful songs and artists, and is able to help me make the Standards Station happen.
