This is pretty cool. A bunch of the World's most well-known progressive rock artists have gotten together to make a Christmas album this year! Steve Hackett (Genesis), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Steve Morse (Deep Purple) and many more! They call themselves the Prog World Orchestra and the CD is just out, "A Proggy Christmas". I think this is my favorite track on the album. They've taken the classic rock staple "Frankenstein" and yuled it up, calling it "Frankincense"!
I don't know much about the band We Shot The Moon. They're from my home town of San Diego, and they've had a bunch of their songs show up on shows on MTV and ABC (and even ESPN's Sports Center). They also have a new Christmas EP called "My Favorite Gift". All the songs from that are featured on the band's YouTube page HERE. The videos aren't really much more than the artwork for the EP, but the music is terrific! Here's their fun and infectious version of "Up On The House Top" Kathy Sledge, the youngest of the Sledge Sisters, gave us a beautiful version of "The Christmas Waltz" a couple years ago. Around the same time, she also recorded the fan-favorite "My Favorite Things". While it made it's way to YouTube, it remained unreleased, but the rumor mill says you'll be able to get it soon! In the meantime, here's Kathy's video! One of the things I really love about running my own Christmas station is that I get to play great songs that, for one reason or another, might have trouble making it onto traditional radio stations. That's the case with Carolyn Sills, who gave us a terrific version of "Blue Christmas" as well as a terrific original that should be played on every station that plays Christmas music! Here's Carolyn's wonderful song "George Bailey" Mikey Wax is a singer-songwriter from Long Island. He's had songs featured in "Ghost Whisperer" and "So You Think You Can Dance". He's just released his first Christmas set, and to kick it off, he actually performed all the songs live, streamed on YouTube! I don't think that video is still around, but here's his video for the title track to his Christmas EP. This is Mikey Wax with "And A Happy New Year" We're very excited to have Richard Kincaid back with us this season! He's gotten together with Cuba Gooding Sr. (of the Main Ingredient) for "This Christmas (Mistletoe)", which is just out (on iTunes and CDBaby). From last year, here's one of our highest rated songs, Richard Kincaid with "Magic Holiday" Back in the mid-1980's, Bryan Adams released "Christmas Time", a wonderful, original Christmas song. And it was initially released on green vinyl! That's definitely some of the fun of records that I miss. There were rarely cool CD releases, and you can't do that at all with an mp3. But I digress. A couple years ago, Bryan Adams gifted his fan club with a new, acoustic song called "Merry Christmas". It was so well-received that he went back in the studio and recorded another version, which he quietly released last year. The video is from Bryan Adams as well, including footage of him, his little brother and his family in 1961, as well as more recent footage of him on tour a couple years ago. Anyway, here's Bryan Adams' "Merry Christmas"... |
